Gotu kola (Centella asiatica (L.) Urb.), a perennial plant native to India, China and Indonesia, has been used to treat many conditions for thousands of years. It was used to heal wounds, improve mental clarity and treat skin conditions such as leprosy and psoriasis. In China it is also used to treat respiratory infections such as colds. Its traditional usage also includes treating syphilis, hepatitis, stomach ulcers, mental fatigue, epilepsy, diarrhea, fever, and asthma.
Today gotu kola is often used to treat varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency, a condition where blood pools in the legs.
It’s also used in ointments to treat psoriasis and help heal minor wounds. Modern researches indicate that the triterpene derivatives from gotu kola could stimulate local collagen synthesis and healing of skin wound. The ingredients could repair inflamed tissue by increasing skin intensity, antioxidants concentration and blood supplying.
The main composition of triterpene glycoside from gotu kola is Asiaticoside, Madecassoside, Asiatic acid and Madecassic acid
Asiaticoside (CAS No.: 16830-15-2): Asiaticoside could stimulate growth of granulation tissue and promote wound healing. It is also popular used for scar repair, anti-wrinkle and skin care. Its scar repair is mainly because asiaticoside could lower division of fibroblast and promote apoptosis of fibroblast. Over amount of collagen deposition is one of the key factors for hyperplastic scar forming.
Madecassoside (CAS No.: 34540-22-2): Madecassoside could stimulate hyperplasia of dermal fibroblasts, promote angiogenesis and stimulate endothelial cell growth. The result is to promote wound healing. Madecassoside could also inhibit inflammatory response, which make it has anti-inflammatory activity.
